June NAPSA Board of Directors Meeting
The NAPSA Board of Directors held its summer board meeting on June 18th – 20th in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina at the Omni Charlotte Hotel, the site of this year’s conference. The hotel is situated near an entertainment district and the board concluded that it will be a wonderful location for the conference. The following board members were present for this board meeting: Barb Darbey, Katie Green, Greg Johnson, Peter Kiers, Frank McCormick, Charlotte McPherson, Mary Pat Maher, Dennis Potts, Pat Smith, Holly Szablewski, and Elwood York. Also present were: Cherise Burdeen, Jessica Keefe and Amy Peko.
Treasurers Report
Board Treasurer, Holly Szablewski, presented the following report on the association’s financial status:The association remains in transition, as all the accounting services are being moved from Anick and Associates to the Pretrial Justice Institute. In the future, the board will receive quarterly budget reports that will assist in better monitoring of spending and cash flow. The reports will include an explanation and analysis of any variances in the budget. As of May 31, 2009, the Association’s income exceeded budget by 28%, or $51,495.
2008 conference expenses exceeded budget by 33.5% or $33,296. The board then discussed the proposed budget for 2009-2010 and the need to operate closely within the budget, especially for the conference. Given the current economic conditions, the income projections for the 2009-2010 budget were very conservative and the board agreed that the association needs to identify additional revenue producing opportunities beyond the annual conference.
Change in Membership Dates
In order to maintain cash and revenue flow throughout the year, the board decided to change the membership effective dates so that, rather than having all memberships run from July 1st through June 30th, membership will start in the month payment is received and will run for 12 months from that date. This decision required a by-law change, which was subsequently approved by the board; more information about the decision and the revised by-laws will be shared with the membership at the annual business meeting.Service Directors Report
Cherise Burdeen, Jessica Keefe and Amy Peko from the Pretrial Justice Institute reported on some NAPSA Service Director activities. They reported that the 2009 membership drive was underway and that upgrades to the membership database were being made so that every interaction between NAPSA and its members is documented. The membership benefits project, which will involve recruiting financial and nonfinancial benefits from companies and vendors, will begin in the summer and hopefully will be completed in time for the annual business meeting. Also, the NAPSA archive materials which were graciously collected, preserved, and then boxed up and shipped to NAPSA by Susan Bookman were catalogued and a list of the materials is now available on the website for members to request items.
The archive materials represent a wealth of NAPSA history and bail reform history and the board is very grateful to Susan Bookman for donating all these materials to NAPSA.
