Understanding Addiction, Overdose Risk, and Prevention: Practical Strategies for Justice Professionals
Individuals involved in the justice system experience disproportionately high rates of substance use disorder and overdose, particularly during critical transition points such as arrest, release, and community reentry. This session will provide participants with a practical understanding of addiction as a chronic, treatable health condition and explore how substance use, overdose risk, and justice-system involvement intersect.
Presenters from the Overdose Response Strategy (ORS) will discuss how public health and public safety partnerships can reduce overdose risk and improve outcomes for justice-involved individuals. Participants will learn about evidence-based overdose prevention approaches, including strategies that can be implemented during high-risk transition periods. The session will highlight the unique role pretrial services agencies can play in identifying risk, strengthening community partnerships, connecting individuals to care, and supporting overdose prevention efforts within their jurisdictions. Attendees will also learn how to engage with ORS resources and partners available nationwide.
